By Hong Hwi-Li

The food and water is usually bought by students or other residents to help the stray dogs survive.

KAMPAR – Students in Kampar are familiar with the issue of stray dogs not only in West City, but also throughout Westlake and New town. It has also become an issue especially when it comes to the clealiness of the streets and alleys, as the stray dogs would dig through the rubbish scouting for food causing a mess.

That aside, there are also many kind and caring students who would always help wherever and whenever they are able to, be it feeding the strays or helping to spread the word to help get them adopted. With the help of social media, the UTAR Kampar Facebook page has a wide platform that students use to raise awareness on various issues.

Lawrence Gan, a volunteer student who has now already finished his studies, adopted and took care of as many stray dogs as he could handle at his hostel in Kampar Putra. He cleaned and fed them, even brought them to the vet for any necessary treatment. Unfortunately, there was an unfortunate incident that was brought about to a point where he had to make a report at the police station.

“One night when I was cooking, I heard cries of pain from one of my dogs outside. I saw a man standing inside the porch with a shovel hitting the dogs”, Lawrence said. The man said it was because he found it annoying that one of the dogs would always chase after his truck, he further threatened by saying that if he sees the dog again, he would kill it.

“I went to the police station to make a report, but the police lady did not take my case seriously at all”, Lawrence mentioned.

However, that is only the helping side of the debate. There are also some people who think that it isn’t a good idea to feed the stray dogs.

“Once you feed them, they will always stick around the same area, making the corridors dirty and there’ll be fleas seen crawling on the floor. They would also bark and cause disturbance”, a resident of West City said.

The stray female dogs need to be spayed so that the reproduction can be controlled, and not cause a burden to the society. Some even tried to find sponsors for spaying and shelters that would take in more dogs. But most of the shelters are already full.

It must be understood that most people can only provide help to a certain extent, by feeding them, taking them in or helping them find a home. But if this issue continues to linger, it will go even more out of control. The female dogs need to be spayed so that the reproduction can be under control.
