Organized by UTAR Banking and Finance Society teaming up with the RHB Banking Group, the RHBIB Vitality Investment Education Workshop (V.I.E.W) was kick started on Wednesday’s afternoon which has attracted more than 120 students to attend.
The speakers were from the RHB Banking Group Ipoh’s branch, where one of the speakers, Mr. Isaac Wong is an alumnus of UTAR.
“The main purpose of today’s workshop is to share some real life stories we had met while working in the finance industry, we wish that through sharing our experiences you could learn something about investment,” said Wong.
Investment is certainly not gambling, to step in to investment we must do homework by researching the background of a company, its annual report, and consider the outside factors that may affect the markets.
“It is not a try of your luck; it is an action after gone through of intensive research on the companies and markets, so if you do your homework well I believe you could succeed in your investment,” Wong continued.
He further gave his humble suggestions for those who are interested in doing some investments in current time to think about investing in futures products.
“The reason I suggest about investing in futures because its cheap entry margins, which means you doesn’t need a large amount of money to invest in, makes it an accessible option for students who hope to gain their first-hand experience in investment.
“Hence I would say that futures are the most capital efficient way to trade and to access into the markets,” Wong highlighted.
Another speaker, Mr. Wong who has been working in the industry for more than 10 years, has advised students that learning investment knowledge at young age is necessary for shaping our financial concept.
“It is encouraging to see a considerable amount of students to attend to this workshop,” said Mr. Wong.
“I’ve met some UTAR students who are already experienced investors themselves and they had incredibly clear thinking when it comes to investment which I’m very impressed by,” Mr. Wong continued.
However, Mr. Wong has stressed that nowadays there are many investment scams and he advised students to be cautious when it comes to invest in to some unknown companies.
“Before you decided to invest in that particular company, check its report, if you found that it has been losing money every year, you should not consider investing in,” he said.
“And never involve in money game scheme, it is illegal in Malaysia,” Mr. Wong warned.
Before the workshop ended, Mr. Wong has shared some tips of investment where he suggested that investing in initial public offerings (IPOs) is a worthy move.
“Like recently the Eco World International IPO with the retail price of RM1.20, and the closing date for applying the IPO is until 20th of March,” Mr. Wong said.
The workshop was particularly useful for students from finance course, like Wong Jia Yi, to come here for some new knowledge.
“The experiences the speakers had shared are valuable as they were come from real life where I could hardly gain from attending lecture classes,” said Wong Jia Yi.

Students were asked to register themselves before entering the hall so they could claim their USSDC point afterwards.

Mr. Isaac Wong is from the RHB Banking Group Futures and Commodities team at Ipoh’s branch, he is also an alumnus of UTAR.
