A Talk about the Era of Post-Truth: The Importance of Media Literacy in Malaysia

The speaker, Prof Dr Mohammed Zin bin Nordin from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) was invited to give a talk on 31st March 2017 (Friday) in Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR Kampar campus).

 

The talk is titled “the Era of Post-Truth: The Importance of Media Literacy in Malaysia”, which is about media literacy in Malaysia and the importance of learning to comb through the gamut of information available online.

 

According to Ms Gan Pei Lee, a lecturer from Department of Public Relations in UTAR said that, “Media literacy is an important issue especially for the students who are closely connected and subjected to the influence of social media and different types of media as this is also a great opportunity for them to expose to different discipline other than studies”.

 

She added, “I am glad to see the good responses of students signing up the event through online as well as on the spot signing up, however, some of them were absent during the actual talk”.

 

This talk welcomes the students, lecturers, and researchers who are interested to share and exchange their thoughts with the speaker, thus, the admission of this event is free but only registration is needed.

 

“I have never attended any talk about media literacy, therefore, I would like to get to know more information about the media discipline through this talk”, said by Neeveidha, a student from English Education course. 

 

Teh Su Yen, another lecturer from Department of Public Relations stated that, “Prof Dr Mohammed Zin bin Nordin was invited as the speaker as he is the expert of media literacy. As well, inviting speakers out of campus could bring in different points of views as they could share their experience which enables the students and lecturers to learn from each other”.

 

This event was organized by The Social Trends and Culture Cluster under Tun Tan Cheng Lock Centre of Social and Policy Studies.

 

The agenda of the talk includes digital culture and abundance, era of post-truth, cybercrimes, media literacy and its research.

 

According to San Qing Sheng, a student from Business Administration course stated that after attending the talk, “I am interested in the era of post-truth, however, the talk is not really what I have expected”.

 

Through good discussion about the topic, the speaker hopes to expose students, educators, and researchers to current research and issues in this area.

Prof Dr Mohammed Zin bin Nordin, the speaker was sharing about the importance of media literacy as the solution of the dangers in the digital world.
